Bihar: A Land of Legacy, A Future in Question

Bihar, the ancient land of Nalanda and Vikramshila, was once the epicenter of knowledge, governance, and trade. It produced visionaries like Chanakya, Ashoka, and Guru Gobind Singh, shaping India’s history with wisdom and resilience. From being the cradle of democracy in Vaishali to nurturing Buddhism and Jainism, Bihar has left an indelible mark on civilization. However, despite its rich past, the present paints a starkly different and an unfortunate picture.

Today, Bihar continues to face challenges in crucial socio-economic indicators. The state’s per capita income stands at ₹66,828 at current prices for the fiscal year 2023-24, which is significantly lower than the national average of ₹1,72,276.  The state contributes less than 3% to India’s GDP, despite housing over 10% of the country’s population. Unemployment rates are high, and industrial growth remains stunted. The education system struggles, with Bihar ranking among the lowest in literacy rates, and over 64% of married women unable to read or write. Health conditions are alarming—infant mortality is at 52 per 1,000 live births, higher than the national average. Infrastructure gaps, migration crises, and policy stagnation continue to hold Bihar back.This disparity highlights the ongoing economic struggles within the region. Although there have been efforts to improve the state of Bihar, these statistics indicate that more targeted interventions are necessary to bring about substantial change.

How long will this disparity persist? Can India truly rise while one of its most historically significant states remains in the shadows? Who will act? Bihar stands at a crossroads, and the answer lies with all of us. It is time to come together, to commit, and to transform. Will we rise to the challenge?
